Auto Insurance 102: FAQ’s & Facts

Now that we’ve covered the basic parts of the average auto insurance policy, let’s take a look at some of the most frequently asked questions I get from clients. And, if you have any questions that haven’t been addressed below, leave a comment and I’ll be sure to address it for you!

·        Do I need coverage if I ride a motorcycle?

Motorcycles aren’t considered autos and are not covered by regular auto policy. They’re also not subject to the mandatory insurance laws of Washington state. That being said, it’s never a good idea to be on the road without some sort of policy in place, and the options for motorcycle insurance are very broad, economical, and worth more than their price in the case of an accident.

  • Do I need to buy additional coverage if I rent a car, truck or moving van?

Rental car companies will always offer you the option of purchasing an insurance policy with them. Before you do so check with your insurance Agent/Broker to find out if your auto policy already covers you for:

  • Liability when you cause an accident involving injury to others
  • Damage you cause to someone else’s car or property, such as a house or fence
  • Damage you cause to the car you’re renting
  • Loss of use of the car you’re renting if it’s not drivable

If you’re renting a large truck, such as a moving van, again, check with your insurance Agent/Broker in advance to see if your policy will fully cover you. Some policies don’t cover large vehicles over a certain weight. If this is the case, ask your Agent/Broker about potential coverage options.

  • Am I covered if I pull a trailer?
    • The liability coverage in your auto policy may provide coverage if you hurt someone or damage their property while you’re in transit with the trailer. You can also buy physical damage coverage for your trailer as an add-on to your existing auto policy.
    • If you have an RV or fifth-wheel vacation trailer, you can often add coverage to your existing auto policy. If not, you can purchase a separate RV/trailer insurance policy.
    • For boat trailers, you can purchase coverage under your boat policy.
    • Before you buy or tow any type of trailer, discuss all of your options with your Agent/Broker, including coverage for any personal property in the trailer, collision, theft, and vandalism.
